Fully hand-stitched patchwork ralli quilt/throw made by Meghwar women, Sindh, Pakistan

Fully hand-stitched patchwork ralli quilt/throw made by Meghwar women, Sindh, Pakistan

$300.00

Like a contemporary painting. Crisp, fresh, bright summer sky blue, deep navy/black, soft yellow, deep pink, white and strong crimson red cotton 100% hand stitched patchwork ralli (quilt/throw) purchased from the Sindhi Thar Desert Meghwar tribal people in Pakistan. Meghwar women are renown for their exquisite needlework, embroidery, patchwork and reverse appliqué. They live in Purdah (isolation) and do not travel even to the nearest village. Their rallis are a loud and proud statement which tells the world of their existence, history and incredible skill.   210cm x 135cm

This design is like a geometric kalidescope made up of triangles, squares and rectangles repeated to create the major pattern enclosed in a grid of rectangles and squares.  A strong inner border of strong pink diamonds is edged in a white zig-zag with each point embroidered with the Meghwar  KUNGRI symbol of a tiny triangle. Around this is a border of soft yellow and navy/black alternate triangles which creates a zig zag design. Finally a solid strip border of white, then on the sides an outer strip border of strong sky blue and top and bottom strip borders of deep red and black.  The whole ralli is quilted in strong pink cotton running stitch. It is backed with a soft pastel pink cotton with tiny heart pattern.   A stunning quilt/throw that would suit a contemporary interior. Very thin wadding. Unstained and no holes.
